Treatment

Design of Treatment Facilities

Jones & Henry uses over 90 years of engineering experience to determine the most appropriate processes to use in designing a treatment plant. Our staff considers local desires, economics, raw water characteristics, available space, and future needs in developing the concepts to provide communities with reasonably-priced, high-quality water.

Our experience includes the design of extensive plant renovations and expansions, as well as new plants. Services include:

  • Source Water Analysis and Layout
  • Process Selection and Layout
  • Alternative Solution Development
  • Cost Evaluations
  • Renovation, Retrofitting, and Expansion
  • Complete Plant Design

Development of Treatment Alternatives and Options

Our experienced staff will evaluate process options and recommend specific alternatives to meet your local needs. Whether the problem is caused by excessive iron and manganese, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, hardness, or other contaminants, cost-effective solutions can be engineered – and it’s our goal to find them.

Distribution

Locating a plentiful water supply and properly treating it are not the only water-related challenges encountered by communities; you need to address distribution and storage, as well.

Jones & Henry has helped many communities develop distribution and water storage systems through a thorough analysis of hydraulics and system capabilities. We have designed underground, ground level, and elevated water storage reservoirs.

Distribution & Storage

Jones & Henry has analyzed numerous distribution systems and has recommended needed improvements such as water line extensions and reinforcement, elevated and ground storage, and pressure boosting.

Our reports typically include a node map of the distribution network and a prioritized listing of recommended improvements with their associated estimated cost.

We use computer models to analyze system hydraulics and to evaluate system capabilities.

Our water distribution system services include:

  • Field testing of system pressure and flows
  • Distribution system modeling
  • Analysis of present and projected future conditions
  • Prioritizing improvements
  • Cost estimating
  • Water line design

Pumping and Storage

Our water distribution and storage engineering services help ensure that sufficient water is transmitted at adequate pressure to every point in the system. As a result, maximum-day, maximum-hour, and fire flow conditions are all met with safety and reserve.

These services include:

  • Storage volume evaluations
  • Pump station reviews
  • High service pumping
  • Complete facilities design
  • Pump station reviews
  • Site and storage tank selections
  • Pressure boosting
  • Water hammer analysis and control

Water Distribution Modeling

Jones & Henry has extensive experience in developing water distribution models for water supply system administrators.

These tools assist communities like you with designing needed improvements (such as water line extensions and reinforcements, elevated and ground storage, and booster stations) and troubleshooting existing problems.

Water Distribution Model Services

Some services we provide for developing a water distribution model include:

  • Model development
  • Analyses of present and future conditions
  • Field testing of system pressure and flows
  • Training owner-employees in the use of the model

Benefits of Water Distribution Models from Jones & Henry:

Our water distribution models can help you with

1) Troubleshooting

  • Determining causes of low pressures
  • Assessing problems affecting tank filling/emptying
  • Evaluating causes of deficient fire-flows

2) Vulnerability Assessments

  • Determining the reliability of your system under unfavorable conditions
  • Water Quality Modeling: evaluating effects of introducing a contaminant at one or more locations with the system
  • Assessing the ability of the system to provide adequate protection against fires

3) Emergency Planning

  • Developing strategies for minimizing the impact of system outages, contamination, and other emergencies so you can minimize “What if?” scenarios
  • Responding to emergencies in real-time, predicting the influence of crisis events, as well as assessing the impact of various possible corrective actions
  • Evaluating past emergencies, understanding their causes, studying the effects of actions that were taken at that time (and actions that could have been taken), and evaluating alternative solutions

4) System Security

  • Master Planning (including both new development and rehabilitation)
  • Feasibility Studies
  • Designing new components (pipes, booster stations, and storage) and evaluating the impact of proposed improvements (pipe replacement and parallel pipes)
  • Designing new developments/subdivisions

When our study is complete, we will provide you with the system model for ongoing use.

Lead Water Service Replacement

Over the past few years, lead drinking water pipe materials have become the focus of renewed interest in the aftermath of drinking water contamination from lead pipe corrosion.

With communities of all sizes looking for ways to prevent water contamination, many are working to develop proactive responses to this devastating issue.

And we’ve been at the forefront of this.

Since 2017, Jones & Henry has paved the way to help Midwestern communities take a new and voluntary approach to lead water service replacement.

The New Approach: Proactive Lead Water Service Replacement

We originally developed our proactive lead water service replacement process for a regional water and sewer district in northwest Ohio. This project involved the replacement of 350 lead water services.

There was no specific concern with drinking water quality mandating the project; instead, our client commissioned the work proactively to address lead in drinking water potential.

Working from regulatory guidance, Jones & Henry Engineers developed a project approach from papers published by many of the world’s top research institutions specializing in lead in drinking water.

It was proven to be successful with this client and helped to influence recent regulatory changes.

What’s Next?

As many communities evaluate their water systems and explore ways to remove all known lead pipe materials from existing water services for the safety and well-being of their residents, we’re here to be your partner throughout the entire process.

Don’t wait until it’s too late; partner with Jones & Henry for your next lead water service replacement project.
